Montaigne, Michel de

Montaigne, Michel de
(1533–92)
   Philosopher.
Montaigne was born into a noble French Périgord family. He was educated in Bordeaux and he studied law in Toulouse. By 1571 he had retired from public life and it was in this period that he wrote the majority of his essays. In 1580 he travelled extensively and between 1581 and 1585 he was Mayor of Bordeaux. His essays on moral philosophy were widely read and were influential on writers such as bacon and pascal. He himself was a practising and conventional Roman Catholic, but his sceptical intelligence, his self-sufficient moral system, his wide knowledge of Classical philosophy and his appealing writing style make his work very attractive.
